In 2022 the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down and the Russia-Ukraine war broke out leading to large-scale atrocities unseen since the Second World War, a huge influx of refugees to Poland, and inflation. The year 2022 has, however, been successful for our journal, which received a new record Impact factor (IF) of 5.218. I would like again to acknowledge herewith the hard work and commitment of the outstanding editorial team and publisher. The flagship journal of the Polish Society of Internal Medicine reinforced its standing, especially among Polish scientific periodicals, in hope that its further growth will go hand in hand with the Society’s expansion.

In 1923 Dr. Gluziński established a monthly Polskie Archiwum Medycyny Wewnętrznej, now Polish Archives of Internal Medicine (the Polish version of the title was used till 2017). Under the editorship of 7 eminent scientists, despite the Second World War and post-war hardship, the Polskie Archiwum Medycyny Wewnętrznej has survived and gained growing international recognition, as evidenced by the 2-year IF released for the first time in June 2012, and its gradual increase from 1.367 to the latest 5.218 over the last decade. Now our journal is open-access and on-line with its own website and an active presence on social media. To mark the 100th anniversary of the journal’s foundation, a special April issue is scheduled. It will present an inspiring history of the beginning of the Polskie Archiwum Medycyny Wewnętrznej and a summary of the greatest findings of Polish internists supporting our journal throughout the years. These will be accompanied by a series of invited review articles by scientists who in the past authored highly-cited papers. A movie about the past and present time of our journal with English subtitles will be made in order to disseminate information about the achievements of Polish internists and their Society worldwide. Its premiere, together with additional celebrations to acknowledge contributions of several scientists still active in the field of internal medicine, are planned at the Interna 2023 conference held on April 20–21 in Kraków, Poland.

As usual, several new initiatives are under way. We have decided to launch video abstracts presenting a summary of major findings of selected articles. The videos prepared by the authors are likely to enhance the visibility of high-quality research published in 2023. We count on early-career researchers who declare to support this type of publishing activities. The journal visibility and impact of the research published therein should be enhanced using novel options. Time will tell whether the video abstracts gain popularity and strengthen the journal’s standing.

I trust that the journal will find the support it has had over the first 100 years renewed for the next 100 years. The future begins today. Every paper with sound methodology and novel observations that attracts attention of the scientific community contributes to the next 100 years of Polish Archives of Internal Medicine. These years depend on us, the support of internal medicine specialists in Poland, and our friends worldwide. We look forward to an exceptional 2023 ahead and look back at 100 years of our past. As the editorial team, we promise to fulfill our tasks to the best of our abilities and knowledge. We hope you enjoy reading our 100-year-old journal with the same keen interest in the future.

May the Christmas time fill our homes with joy and peace despite all odds. I wish all of you a better New Year 2023 in peace and hope.
