Wirus HCV to wirus zapalenia wątroby typu C. Powoduje on zapalenie wątroby, które u 50–85% chorych po fazie ostrej (ostre zapalenie wątroby typu C) przechodzi w przewlekłe zapalenie wątroby typu C. Nieleczone przewlekłe WZW typu C powoduje wiele poważnych powikłań. Istnieją skuteczne i bezpieczne leki, dlatego ważne jest jak najszybsze wykrycie zakażenia, aby nie dopuścić do rozwoju niekorzystnych konsekwencji zdrowotnych.
